Syyn Labs's League of Extraordinary Nerds

Fast Company: "We're a sensationalism service," says Brent Bushnell.
Ask cofounder Adam Sadowsky and he says, "We're a one-stop production company: We make physical art that moves people."
"We want to be the 'engineering is cool' group," Bushnell adds.
Another cofounder, Eric Gradman, sums it up this way: "We're a glorified drinking club with an art problem."

This is a company that i would love to work for. Applied Minds and Syyn seem like creative, fun environments that would require the ability to communicate and work on a wide spectrum of concurrent projects. Even though they are based in a completely different form of creativity sometimes, these companies seemed to have a process similar to theater. I bet a manager would have to be very nimble and able to communicate across multiple disciplines in those environments.

I have two reactions here. A) "Nerd" seems to be a big buzz word these days and whilst I truly enjoy the hipster angle that being creative and smart at the same time is now allowed to be considered cool, there is still a deep-seeded feeling of "Isn't this a nice little hobby you've got? You're so cute..." that I kinda detest. Maybe it's just the jaded side of me talking but Sadowsky's comment of wanting to be be the company that people quit their [real] jobs for is unsettling. It just feels like even they don't take themselves seriously enough to consider it "work." But b) Even at the same time as I'm feeling the above, I can't help get a little lost in that euphoria of Art. I guess it's why I'm here pursuing technical arts degree and not an engineering degree (let's ignore that I can't do all the math for now). Maybe that's why I feel a little incensed at their protective "we're just doing this cause we love it" attitude. The hidden, unspoken end of that thought seems to be, "Really, I'm not wasting time, Mom, I've got a real job during the day." Like there's something...obscene about wanting to make art and make money at the same time.

Wow. That is a great feature for a theatre to include. I'm sure instead of just watching the kids the sitters will come up with cool interactive theatre activities for the children to do. Educate them at the same time they are being taken care of. I don't know why they are only offering this on Sunday though. I feel like this would be a good thing for all days of the week.
