It seems like everyone is doing this show this year. I know at least a few other universities that are doing it, and several summer companies. Initially, it didn't make too much sense to me why so many theatres tend to jump on a bandwagon like this, like when everyone was doing Urinetown a few years back. But thinking about it more, I can see their logic. For professional companies, it means guaranteed bodies in the seats. Spelling Bee has become pretty famous, so people will come and see it. For schools, I think the attraction is that it's actually good material which poses some unique challenges, like adults playing children. Although it pains me a little to see everyone doing the same musical, I guess it makes sense.
I agree with Sam, it is sad that everyone does the same production once the rights are released. Having a variety in the season between theatres would be nice, but that wouldn't stop me from seeing a show more then once, or at a different venue. Having worked on Spelling Bee before it will be interesting to see how different companies produce the work. Comparing productions is always a great learning experience. The uniqueness and interaction with Spelling Bee is also great for more people to experience, and cater to all generations.
