Dates set for world premiere of Disney's 'Aladdin' at 5th Avenue
Seattle Times Newspaper: "The stage version of the Disney animated musical 'Aladdin' will have its world-premiere run at the 5th Avenue Theatre July 7-31 in Seattle. The show will feature the hit 1992 film's Academy Award-honored musical score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and a cast and creative team drawn from Seattle and Broadway.

I heard that Disney was putting together Aladdin, but I didn't realize it was so soon. I guess with Lion King still working its way across the country and Mary Poppin's doing the same they wanted another big hit. Although I am tired of Disney pulling out all of their classic for the stage this production should do well due to the fact that it is one the "classic" Disney movies.
I don’t get it Disney doing more shows. It just seems like "let’s use an old hit movie to make a show." I would find it interesting if they were to come up with a new story and work off it as a original piece of work. Then they could make a movie off of the show. I can see the argument that if they were successful with the movie why changes it. I wonder if the people that had tickets to Oklahoma are mad about getting tickets to this new show Aladdin. I know a few people that would be pretty mad about that. I hope that the show is a great hit just like some of the other Disney's shows and has a long run.
Interesting you should mention them wanting to do a commercial production. I read about this production a few days ago (http://www.broadway.com/buzz/154896/aladdin-stage-musical-to-premiere-at-seattles-5th-avenue-theatre/) and noted the last key sentence:
"The production is not planned as a pre-Broadway engagement and is intended to be licensed to regional and other professional theaters."
So, as yet, Disney is keeping mum on whether they intend to develop this as a commercial production for Broadway or Tours. However, 5th Avenue lists "bound-for-Broadway" shows as one of their main types of presentations, so perhaps Disney is simply being coy - or feels stung by how poorly Little Mermaid and Tarzan fared on Broadway. I for one am interested to see which route this production goes!
