Tonys award below the line stars
Variety: "According to Tony guidelines, above-the-title performers are generally considered lead thesps while below-the-title thesps are featured. The Tony administration committee meets regularly throughout the season to determine any changes to that policy on a show-by-show basis."

While I understand that all roles are not created equal, the idea that the Tonys need to decide, and then declare that non-lead actors are capable of winning their award beyond bizarre. While the Oscars address this issue by having the supporting cast section of their awards, they at least acknowledge that amazing performances can be given by the actors in the non-main rolls. Oddly, the article left the idea that non-main actors might be able to upstage the main-role actors, I would be very interested in seeing how the theater community would react to something like this happening.
I love watching the Tonys each year. It is always something to look forward to but I had no idea that they judged who wins awards based on a show by show basis. I do agree with Charlie that it is a little odd that non-lead actors can be put up for these particular awards featured in the article. To me it doesn't seem like this is mentioned very often and the theatre community just lets it happen which is sad. I did not realize there were so many politics involved in the tony award nominations.
