Stage Automation Engineer - February, 2010

American Theatre Wing: "Stage Automation Engineer Chuck Adomanis designs the modern automated system for moving theatrical scenery. He demonstrates the control system on the new set built for the Billy Elliot tour. His designs created on computer are executed by many craftsmen on the shop floor. Notable designs using Hudson Scenic Automation are The Lion King's Pride Rock, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's flying car, and the large video screens used by the current Dreamgirls tour. Adomanis shares the origins of his interest in stagecraft, his career path, and what continues to motivate his work."

It's absolutely amazing what can be done with automation nowadays. I haven't seen Dreamgirls, but I saw Lion King several years ago on Broadway, and I have recently seen the touring production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the automation used in these productions creates many awe-inspiring effects. When I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I had already taken a backstage tour and learned a bit about how the flying car worked, but when seeing it from the audience during the performance, I was astonished at how cool the car was in action. The sort of effects that can be done through the use of automation, lighting, and projection is going to continue to develop as technology grows, and it will be amazing to see what new effects will be created.

After I saw phantom of the opera, I was attracted by moving stage. It was wonderful! As technology has been developing, theatre technology is also developing. Also high-technology in theatre make pass the limit of theatrical space and limit of ideas.
