Ballet Theatre gets dorm for students
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has completed acquisition of a building to be a dormitory for out-of-state students attending Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School. Renovation of the rectory of the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, at 3501 Penn Avenue, Lawrenceville, is scheduled to be completed by June 1"

At first when I saw this article I was wondering how such a small school would need a dorm building, but I was thinking of a dorm on the scale of the ones on the Carnegie Mellon campus and forgetting that they can be considerably smaller. Using a former rectory seems like a great idea to reuse a building that was originally in effect a small dormitory for the priests and is too large to be a house and structured poorly to be an office or store (and using it for industry would probably be even worse).
I think that it's a almost necessary element to provide housing for international students. It's so hard to find housing if you're unfamiliar with the area. I think it really is so nice that PBT gives housing to their international students. It won't just give them a decent place to live, but it will really help them assimilate into the culture and bond with the other students that they are living with. Like Tom said, I do tend to forget that dorms can be on a considerably smaller scale, but the costs of renovations lead me to believe that it is a much bigger than a normal dormitory living space.
This is a superb opportunity for such a small pool of talent. I didn't know that Pittsburgh Ballet had a school for this type of audience. A lot of times offering this training is a great opportunity but the feasibility is a crucial element of the training so that you can really offer that to those that are qualified or have the potential for the program instead of just to those that can afford to put themselves up in the area. Although the dorms are small, I think this really helps the school to reach out to a much wider audience.
