The Stage: "Viewers will be able to watch this year’s Laurence Olivier Awards live on the internet, marking the first time the ceremony has been shown as and when it happens."
I have a feeling we're going to be going in this direction more and more in the near future, especially with certain awards shows for theatre, like the Tony's, that have lower and lower ratings each year. They've cut time off of it every year, but even still, we're a country where live theatre and being involved in it is a small part of the entertainment industry. Eventually, we'll be watching the awards shows live on the internet, and will maybe get to see them on TV if we have the supertastic HBO cable package.
I think if award shows like the Tony's do get broadcast online it will be because that is the new medium for all of television. I don't necessarily think that it has to do with low ratings. I feel that its more the result of people having more access to the internet and preferring to watch their programs online wherever they are and not the result of anything negative. I'll be excited when shows will be more readily available. Not just series that are already available like on nbc, abc, and fox, but also specials like award shows. I don't have a tv at school so the only reason I can keep up with my shows are because they're online.
I agree with both Chapel and Jen. Watching TV on the internet is becoming the new medium. I dont think its necessarily because we want to watch where ever we are, but whenever we want. A lot of people miss award and tv shows because they are too busy and are doing something productive. its nice to be able to have that accessibility.
