The myth of a golden age

The Guardian: "I've no wish to be a party pooper and I'm delighted by the strong showing of two excellent theatres in the nominations for the annual Olivier awards, which recognise the best of London's theatrical talent: 15 for the Royal Court and 10 for the Donmar Warehouse. But, before we get carried away, it's important to nail a few prevailing myths."

This article brings up an interesting point about awards. I feel like we've mentioned the need for new plays on this blog a number of times. The author states that new plays are being produced all the time. The majority, however, just aren't recognized by the awards, therefore they don't make names for themselves. When you think about it, it's not just theatre that does this. Lots of movies and musical artists go unrecognized every year because they aren't very mainstream. Of course the awards are usually somewhat bias, political, and usually recognize mainstream works. This will most likely always be the norm, and yes it's not fair, but really what can you do? I agree that it is important to recognize smaller independent pieces as well, and I'm glad this author also recognizes that although we can always support the creation of new plays and encourage them to be produced, we're not at a complete loss for them like everyone says we are.
