Rent has such a strong fan base, with a cult following for the original cast members that this is a good marketing ploy for them. Because Rent has been running and touring for so long, I'm sure they are starting to loose their audiences after so many years of being part of the season. If they are looking to sell more seats, this is the way to do it. Too bad they dont have more of the original girls. Its seems Adam and Anthony have stayed closer to the Rent camp then Idina and the other women.
I agree that its a smart move to have Rapp, Pascal, and Stewart in the touring show. I didn't know they were in it this time around, and had I known I probably would have gone and seen it. I think its an interesting phenomenon to have original cast members return so often to Rent, either on stage or for the movie. I could be wrong, but I didn't think actors liked to return to old roles for fear of being thought of as only capable of playing that character. Either way, I'm glad they go back because the voices in the original cast are amazing.
For a lot of people, the original cast members are just as important to the production of Rent as the music and choreography. This production will definitely draw in a large audience if its featuring two original cast members. However, it seems like Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal are getting a little old for Rent. They originated the roles over ten years ago, and while they're both still very talented and look great, it's making less and less artistic sense for Rapp and Pascal to maintain these roles.
I saw this touring production and it really was fantastic. Though Rapp and Pascal are both wonderful actors, the show itself was just very well done. I think sometimes shows really on star power to be good, which almost always results in a terrible production. This tour of Rent cast some very talented actors (including CMU grad Telly Leung) that came together for a powerful performance. To this day this production has been one of my favorite performances. So much of a show relies on the passion and energy of the actors, and this cast certainly had that.
