Why do college students get such long winter vacations?
Slate Magazine: "Most working adults don't get much official time off during the holidays—the Explainer, for instance, is only released into the wild on Christmas and New Year's Day. But students get tons of vacation time—some college breaks last as long as six weeks. How'd these kids get so lucky?"

What I find interesting is that Brown students wanted more time off during their spring break, so they asked the administration to take away some of their Christmas vacation time. I understand that students want to go away with their friends (usually) on spring break, but there is something almost sacred about the amount of time off students get during the Christmas holidays. It is a time where you have a chunk of time that you can actually catch up with you family, whether you like it or not. Maybe it's just because the students wanted two of the same length breaks, but for some reason, this is reading to me as: students wanting to "have" to spend less time at home, and more time partying it up with their friends. I'm not passing any judgment and I could be completely incorrect, but that just doesn't feel quite right to me.
I rely did not know why college students did not have long brakes. But it dose make since in that they wounded to save energy in the 70s and once they did it they saw how much money they are saving and the students liked it to I bet so then. It is great to have a long brake so that you can get some rest and get caught up with your family and friends and get time to presses the things that I had learned. I am very happy that they give us this sort of break. But it is cool that at Browen that they get a longer spring brake and smaller winters brake that would also be nice to have. So this was a very in lighting article.
Not to pass judgement, but I think Robert may have been on break for too long....or I'm hoping is just drunk haha.
I can't even begin to think about what a WRECK I would be if our winter break were shorter. This past weekend was when things started to kick into gear for me and I got the energy/motivation to tackle next semester. If break had been any shorter, I don't think I'd be ready for next semester.
When looking at breaks how can you leave out summer? There are schools out there that use a lot of different calendars, I've seen public schools that run year round with 3 trimesters and students where students attend 2 out of 3 each year. Summer is not always so sacred that it's not even looked at as a break. Similarly some schools run a shortened semester ("winter term" or the like) during what used to be the Christmas vacation, this gives students an option to not even go home, they can instead stay in class most of the time if they prefer.
