American Conservatory Theater Offers 3 World Premieres

NYTimes.com: "Like the thrill of settling into a plush seat as the curtain rises on a highly anticipated production, there’s the excitement over the announcement every March of the American Conservatory Theater’s coming season, with its promises of innovatively staged classic plays, bold new works by powerful writers and acclaimed productions imported from beyond the Bay Area."

It is troublesome to see that the American Conservatory Theater has lost so many patrons, but in this economy that seems par for the course. Although its interesting that the reason cited for this decline isn't money but the fact that the shows have been too avant-garde. In a time where theaters are struggling to stay open I would hope that their new efforts would pay off and garner the attention of new patrons rather than alienate their base. Its remarkable that they have so many playwrights on staff and that they are willing to take so many risks. I feel like too many people are playing it safe - taking an old classic or doing a re-make and slapping on a big name actor to fill seats. I hope the American Conservatory Theater sees better luck in the future and that they have good returns on the risks they are taking.
