What is This 1950? Women Are Missing as TV Creators

Women & Hollywood: "It’s pilot time in Hollywood. The time of the year when all the networks look at the submitted scripts and decide which ones to take to pilot. Then after they see the pilots, the networks then decide which shows to put on the air next season. It is a cut throat and difficult process."

This so strange, maybe it’s because a lot of my favorite shows are by female writers and producers but I thought that there was a lot more female representation in the industry. When I look at shows like 30 rock written by Tina Fey and Grey's anatomy by Shonda Rhimes, I've always thought I've enjoyed them so much partially because I could tell it had been written by a women and because some of the character and plot was so incredibly easy to relate too, its really surprising that there aren't more women writers that are submitting pilots especially since a lot of the women who did are in collaboration with other writers. I find it especially surprising that Lifetime who has what seems to be a largely female viewing audience doesn't have any shows written by women.

It's really interesting to read this list and see that a good number of show are still co-written with a man. I'm wondering what is causing the significant drop in female writers this year than in 2009. Could executives possibly see female writers as a financial risk? And by going with male writers they are playing it safe in today's economy?

There are very few situations in which I feel that women are being under-represented. In this case, although statistics definitely show that the number of female writers is significantly fewer than men, I don't think this creates much cause for concern. We are in an age where if a talented female writer wanted a job, she is certainly an applicant for one. There are many professions in which males are the majority, but I believe that over time this will even out significantly.

This doesn't surprise me at all because just last week in PTM we were talking about that there is an award that is just for women. It is really sexist. Why do there have to be things just for women and just for men? It creates barriers. If there is an award just for women then there should be one just for men. As I said before this just doesn't come as a surprise because once a woman becomes a certain age it is difficult for them to get a job as a writer. We talked about that in PTM last week also.
