‘Addams Family’ Wit Is a Challenge for Broadway

NYTimes.com: "Among the dozens of cartoons that Charles Addams drew of his devilishly subversive Addams family is one in which Gomez and Morticia; their daughter, Wednesday; son, Pugsley; and manservant, Lurch, are admiring the view from their new picture window. The view is of a cemetery crowded with tombstones."

When I think of the Addams Family, I think of three movies that came out in the 1990s, and the TV show that aired around the same time. The cartoon just seems a little too dated for most modern audiences to remember, or for that matter, still find entertaining.

While the article did not talk much about the play itself, the small section it covered did not seem to feel very Addams Family. Part of what I think of as Addams Family is that they did not think of themselves as weird, or for that matter as especially morbid, they just were.

I like the idea of using the cartoons. I think its a smart move because the production wont be compared to another set body of work. A friend of mine saw it in Chicago and had great things to say. I dont think it will last long, or become a classic, but hopefully it will do well. Rumor has it that Bebe wont make it to NYC..... hopefully they can keep their other headliners
