Whimsy takes center stage

JSOnline: "Whimsy is given little space in our culture.
The economic and political funk into which we have plunged seems to scream for feverish rationality and practicality. Every dot must be connected, lest we miss something crucial to survival."

Too often in theater, we look for a reason why. What does this mean? Why this play now? and all of that. But sometimes, it is good just to have fun. While theater is meant to make people think, it is also a form of entertainment, something people do to have fun. Especially in these troubled times, people need to relax and enjoy what they are seeing.

Two years ago, I worked on a production of 'The Boy Friend' at my high school. The cast was complaining because the show was not about anything, and the director asked them if they were having fun. The response, an enthusiastic YES. Theater is thought provoking, but it is also fun.
