AutoCAD tips: "You can use fields (AutoCAD 2005 and later) to create automatic labels that provide information about objects.
I've covered aspects of this topic before. In 'Tutorial: Display the area of an enclosed figure,' I show how to use fields to create a label that displays an area.
In 'Tutorial: Create attributes,' I mention that you can use fields in attributes.
In this tutorial, I'll expand on the idea of using fields in attributes, which are labels attached to blocks."

I like. I need to actually try this out and do it a couple of times to get the hang of it, but this couple be really useful for bolts and such. Also, some people turn everything into blocks, and if this is you, then your blocks very easily get named, and get renamed if you modify something. This is actually pretty cool and exciting. I have found lately that fields in attributed blocks can be very useful.
while the length attribute seems useless to me (we have a bunch of dimension commands to do this), i now wonder what other values autocad can automatically display about an object.
What would be even better would be dynamically generated blocks - you type in the length and it makes it that length (not stretching). Ex: you have a 3D model of a bolt and want to add another inch of threads to the end of it.
