'Great Gatsby' failed to fulfill at Benedum

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "F. Scott Fitzgerald's tale of life in the Roaring Twenties, 'The Great Gatsby,' was transferred to the stage in an imaginatively theatrical but flawed production that Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre presented over the weekend as its season opener."

This is almost a full circle with me because my first project here at carnegie mellon was at the Pittsburgh Ballet theatre. The first show in their season was non the less, the Great Gatsby! It sucks to hear that the show went so poorly, but I don think this article does any justice to why it sucked..? It talks about how the show failed and how it did not fulfill the benedums standards but all the article says is a summary of the story. So maybe they can be a bit more precise in how they critic the show.

This is so disappointing to hear! I agree with Paige. The article criticizing "The Great Gatsby" did not clearly tell us how the show failed the Benedum's standards. If a critic has the nerve to rip a show apart, they should provide detailed reasons for their readers.

This reviewer had every right to rip on the piece. He actually did his homework and read both the book and the stage version and then saw the show. Need I remind you of the review we got for "The Other Shore" and how that person didn't understand anything about it. Sure this person never really explains what was missing, but he could at least appreciate it.

It's unfortunate that the show did not stand up to the Benedum and the Ballet's standards. I hope that the folks at the ballet were able to learn from the experience and use that information to help enhance other productions in the future. I'm happy to see that the review, although he didn't give very specific details, seemed to know the show and story well and, to use Chase's phrase, "did his homework." At least it was a fair judgement.

Its a bit unsettling to hear this, but then again, i feel better about not being able to make the performance. i was going to go hopefully on the Saturday night performance, but was unable to obtain tickets. Even still, i would have like for this to have gone better.
