Free Night of Theater 2007: See a bit of drama, on the house
The Austin Chronicle: "ree theatre. A great way to get people to sample some of the art of the stage, yes? That was the thinking of Theatre Communi-cations Group, a national service organization for nonprofit theatres, when it launched the pilot program of Free Night of Theater in 2005, and the results were encouraging. Among the three pilot cities – one of which was Austin – more than 8,000 people attended the 170 performances offered at no charge."

i was surprised to see that for 15 percent of the people it was there first night of theatre. any program that gets 15 percent of the theatres full of people who have never been exposed to theatre in any way, is most definitly one to support. it would be interesting to see how many of those people would say they would pay to come back to the theatre.
what a good way to get people in to see a variety of theatre. Especially in city's where there can be so many different types of art performing, it must be good to be able to taste test to see if it something you'd like.
it allowes tried and true theatre goers to try something avant garde as well as the person who has no theatrical experience at all. it works well for everyone, especially with the boost of ticket sales occuring after.
