Jerry Springer — The Opera in Concert to Play Carnegie Hall
Playbill News: "Featuring music by Richard Thomas with book and lyrics by Stewart Lee and Thomas, Jerry Springer—The Opera began as a 'scratch night' event in 2001, then underwent a number of workshops before making a splash — also in a concert version — at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2002. National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner picked up the work as his first production."

ridiculous... i'm sick of entertainers merging mediums. it creates a really hard world for the actual trained artists of the time to converge into. their spaces are all being by people with previous experience in another field but with the name to carry them anywhere... i have heard mixed reviews about jerry and his shows.... i'm interested to see how everything plays out with the opera musical warp...
Well even though this sounds absolutely ridiculous so does muppets talking about porn so who knows. This doesn't sound like my kind of thing or anything but I think people should at least be open minded. The whole thing of mixed mediums is interesting... A lot of Broadway shows are all from movies like Disney shows, and the new Mel Brooks shows.
Its good to see that the world has a sense of humor. Its even better to see that the same people who direct Broadway shows have a place in their heart for Jerry. It will probably be terrible, but for a limitied engagement, its a brilliant idea. Something like Jerry the Opera will get people to come out and support the arts. Its good for the arts to have diversity and mixing of mediums and artists.
I honestly am shocked that this show took such a long time to make it to America, for its definitely been around for a while now. I've been kind of curious about the show, but if Jerry's movie is any sign, people aren't going to be willing to pay any money to watch anything about Jerry Springer. I actually think that the word "opera" in the title will be the red flag, though, because people aren't exactly clamoring to go see operas in today's world.
Good god.
what has theater come to?
has the american musical fallen so far from it's glory days that it's turning jerry springer, the trashiest of trashy talk shows, makes is to CARNEGIE HALL. jesus, producers must think that the american public will watch anything, even if it was adapted from a show in which women admitted they've slept with their sons, men admit to sleeping with sheep, brothers declare their love for eachother, and every few minutes a fight is broken up, and followed by the chant "JERRY! JERRY! JERRY!"
yes...this is what i want to see.
anyone got a spare 75.50 they could lend me to watch such trash?
Don't knock it until you've seen it! No, its not a "real" opera (although there is a singing valkyrie!). The show offers a lot of cutting commentary on American life and mores to those sophisticated enough to get the message. (Those two Brits who wrote this really captured the essence of American tabloid/reality show culture!)
Plus it offers an avalanche of laughs and catchy songs that are better than many from today's staid Broadway shows. Its good to see something a little edgy and challenging now and again!
I've seen the London and Chicago productions, will be catching the Minneapolis show, and hope to see all upcoming American productions!
