Pilot Season: Female Creators, Directors Break Through

Variety: The 2018 pilot season is shaping up to be a landmark year for women behind the camera.

Female creators and directors saw gains virtually across the board, as networks ramp up efforts to include more women in the pilot process. As Variety previously reported, the Time’s Up and Me Too movements have played important roles this season, with the networks all looking for ways to increase female representation.

YES FEMALE EMPOWERMENT! This article is showing the real numbers of what a movement like #MeToo can do to create actual change. While the numbers shown aren’t groundbreaking, they are definitely an improvement from last year. Women's’ role in directing and creating has minimally increase, but this increase shows promise in a steady increase over many more seasons and years. Hopefully this is one small step in the right direction that will lead to eventually monumental change. Especially because these numbers are being shown about women behind the camera, it’s demonstrating the entertainment industries ability to recognize the need for change. Women are just as smart, creative, and innovative as men. We can create as high if not a high caliber of entertainment as men can. We deserve more of a role in the entertainment industry and I believe that these television networks are trying to bring about this change in recognition of these facts.

It is really exciting to hear about the movements that have been so forcefully backed over the past few months to truly have an impact in our industry. I really appreciate getting to read the actual numbers and hearing the statistics. It makes the change not only feel real, but it gives a reality to the effect of these movements that serve as a catalyst to encourage even more forward movement. It is clear how much of an impact has been made simply by looking about how these changes have taken place not just with one network or one kind of show, but that these movements have reached all of the major broadcasters, series of all levels of establishment, and from all backgrounds. I can’t wait to see what more good comes from this, and I am really excited to see their work. I think that being at my age during this time of transformation is a really incredible opportunity to expose myself to as much new material as I can because a lot of it is coming from points of view that are completely new and radical, and that is a major reason why I want to have a career in the artistic industry.
