Hot Set

Technical Direction Tidbits: SyFy has a new series out called Hot Set. I caught the first episode, and thought that it was interesting. I have always thought that the similarities and differences between theatre, tv & film were interesting. The froth packs (AB foam) is something that we use & is a good technique for scenery.

I really love the show, Face Off which is a competition of stage/special fx makeup. The same people who produced that reality show created this "Hot Set". I always love shows that display the difficulty and creativity of the business I want to be in (though I don't do makeup or set design).

It is interesting to see people work on the extreme ends of situations thrown at technicians in the theater/film world. For example time and budget constraints that one would consider to be impossible, are proven to be anything but.

Also, it is always fun to follow specific designers, learn about their past experience and see them progress throughout a series. I would love to watch this show, and I think it may be good for other technicians to watch it as well, if anything just to open our eyes to what is possible for the hard working and talented.

I don't know much about the show itself, however after reading this post and having it brought up in classes once or twice recently I'm intrigued. Looks like I'll be adding yet another show to my DVR list. I guess my big question still is what industry does this show really focus? Is it film, tv, theatre, production in general, large props?

Guess I'll have to watch it to find out....

It seems like this post talks about the differences, but also about how everything we do is still closely related. Being able to resource in the same way, build in close manner, but possibly on a different scale or time frame is something I feel happens across one industry and between industries. It would be interesting to see more about the show and how they accomplished the items that the author is discussing. Taking what people learn in film and applying it to theatre, and vice versa, is always fun to do. Making something lens ready or proscenium ready can be a challenge but makes us more creative.

I've heard a lot about "Hot Set" lately and I keep being told to watch it. To be perfectly honest, when i found out it was by the same people who did "Face Off" I had no interest. I always find competition shows about design to be very annoying because the creators of the show always seem to be more interested in creating drama between the designers on the show than the actual work produced. With that said, I've seen a couple episodes of Face Off and the work that is produced on the show is pretty cool. I haven't seen any of Hot Set yet but I can only hope its a good quality tv show.
