New SeaWorld San Diego drones show launching this May

attractionsmagazine.com: It is official: one of San Diego’s summertime traditions is being reimagined from the ground up. SeaWorld San Diego has received unanimous approval from the California Coastal Commission to replace its long-running fireworks shows with a nightly choreographed display featuring up to 1,000 illuminated drones soaring over Mission Bay.

I personally hate sea world as a concept because of the poor living conditions of the animals there. I think it's interesting that only after a lawsuit about a different way that SeaWorld was harming animals did they transition to drone shows. Drone shows are way better for the environment in general compared to fireworks but it only seems like they cared when they had to pay money for it and when they had the threat of losing customers because of reputational stuff. I generally just think we should not have seaworlds but separating their drone shows from their other issues I think drone shows are really very neat. I love the alternative they provide to fireworks because there's all sorts of parts of fireworks that are just really bad. I also think it is just a really cool and unique use of technology that can inspire further interesting uses of technology.

Despite the issues that exist with the concept and operation of sea world it is interesting and a good thing that they are choosing to get rid of the nightly firework show and replace it with a drone show. The drone show comes with a lot of benefits that can not be obtained from a firework display. The drone show creates less pollution both sound and smoke, and can be more accurately controlled with weather being less of a variable. A drone show has an infinite amount of variability especially as the technology involved continues to advance. Versus a firework display which can only be composed of the fireworks that are on hand and available to use at the time of the show. A drone show can be different every night as long as the creative team has enough time to prep and program a new performance, and as long as none of the drones are damaged the performances with be cheaper show to show as compared to a firework display where new fireworks need to be bought before each performance.

Sea World is one of those things that, as a San Diego Native I have really mixed feelings about. I love seeing the fireworks every night of the summer, but I have seaworld with a fiery passion. People always want to go there when they visit, but I prefer to watch the fireworks at Fiesta Island later in the night. A Drone show switches up the entire San Diego ecosystem for me. I think it would be nice for them to implement that for noise pollution and smoke and for the animals' comfort; however, not to be selfish, but it feels like a major part of my summer is going away. My last night in San Diego, my best friend and I went and watched the fireworks show to celebrate our college acceptances. I have bonfires where at the end of the night, we all watch them together. I understand for an ecological standpoint, this is good, but I will miss it.
