DKGR Architects reveals expansion plans for Indiana’s oldest theater

www.archpaper.com: The Crump, Indiana’s oldest known theater still in operation, has been “about to be reborn” for over 30 years. On April 8, the Crump Center for the Performing Arts released the schematic design for the restoration and eastern expansion of the Crump Theatre in Columbus. This is the first time the promise of its renovation has come with architectural drawings.

I love to see how theaters are being restored as the times change and new technology develops. This particular renovation struck my interest because along with the normally renovating of the tech systems and accessibility aspects they have increased the seating by 50 seats. This will bring their total seat count up to 800 raising their overall audience percentage by 6%. Although 6% doesn't seem like a very large number I can understand the want to increase the ability to invite more people to view the show and over the course of a full run 50 seats will allow many people to come view the show. It was also interesting to read about the theater's previous renovations as originally it was an arcade. Theaters are always innovating and will continuously need renovations so it is an audience's duty to make sure to show up and go see a show to promote better stories and new art.

My friend is from Indiana and I’ve heard about this theater because of her. When I visited her we almost went but never got to due to the tight schedule we were on. It’s cool to hear that its getting renovated and also the article going back through all its sort of different eras and names was very interesting. Talk about historical context. Its cool to hear about all these stories of these smaller theaters for me considering I come from where broadway is so I don’t tend to hear these sort of interesting little historical sort of community theater stories very often. I want to go to this theater next time im in town visiting my friend! Maybe it’ll be renovated by then? I hope so! Then I’ll use this article to brag to my friend about alll the history I know about this theater in her area and she’ll probably be very confused but it’ll be fun.
