Bad Bunny and Latinx Theatre Commons Start Storytelling From the Beginning

AMERICAN THEATRE: “In any performance we create, we’re calling into existence things that existed already.” Raquel Torre invokes numerous references as we speak about the theatricality of February’s “Benito Bowl,” when Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny) dramaturged Boricua resilience and the history of Latine migrant music through his 13-minute Super Bowl halftime performance at Santa Clara, California’s Levi’s Stadium. For those 13 minutes, Latin American folks and allies around the world gathered in parties, on street corners, and in green rooms to experience the moving moment.

The idea that the Benito Bowl is still being talked about and recognized is something big for the Latin community especially due to the time we are living in today. I absolutely loved this performance and have watched it a few times since the live performance and noticed something so specific or accurate about the Latinx community that it really does show a journey through not only Puerto Rico, but for the Latinx Community as a whole. The article mentions how this production is theatre not only because of the spectacle, but also because of the amount of dramaturgical detail within the design. I just finished a big dramaturgical project and know the amount of research that a designer or dramaturg has to do to create the spectacle of the production especially if it is a real situation or location. I think the production overall just shows the immense detail that connects the Latinx community to this performance and Bentio's music.
