AI Fluency Is the New Career Moat (And How to Build It)

Asian Efficiency: A college senior asked me recently how to stand out when he graduates. His name is Jacob. He is about to start a construction internship — his first real job. He has been learning AI tools. He wanted to know whether it would actually make a difference. I told him the honest answer: yes, but not in the way most people think.

I have a new thing I have to do: taking an AI class at CMU that teaches me how to do this! This is a fantastic point. I feel like all of what I hear about in the Arts is either people who are afraid of it and tell you not to use it because it'll take our jobs or curious about it but only using tools that are already created. This is such a fantastic idea to create your own tools using AI. It seems like a no-brainer, but what better way to understand AI and its limitations than to build it for yourself. The article goes on to explain how to start with something in your own life that's repetitious and see how you can automate it on a small scale. It was also interesting the emphasis it placed on not only documenting your creation but also publishing it for others to see.

I wish that I could be more happy about people utilizing and creating new AI, but unfortunately due to the environmental costs of AI, I cannot. AI could be a really useful tool to a lot of people, but because of how it has been used and abused I do not actually think it can be as useful of a tool as AI lovers keep insisting it is. Humanity is losing a lot of soft skills through the use of AI. Especially the people who use it to talk to when they get lonely or need therapy. I am impressed by people who create their own AI systems because coding and the creation of it does take a lot of smarts. It is the people who use AI regularly that I judge. I also really dislike the companies that choose to hire less people because AI can do the job because they are taking jobs away from real people and adding to the unemployment crisis.

I do generally agree with this article but I really hate that we’ve gotten to this point as a society. As a person in the working industry I do think that it is important to keep yourself updated on all the relevant technology that will affect you and your work, AI is that technology in this moment and having a good understanding of ai systems is a good way to set yourself apart from the pack especially since companies are taking a pro ai stance(they will be more likely to hire someone who has skills that aligns with their goals in terms of ai). However I really hate the idea of companies using ai to replace human labor, the line about companies wanting less employees and turning to ai for this goal worries me and I hate that this will become more prevalent as ai becomes better and better.
