Portland’5 Centers for the Arts faces management change, physical needs assessment
Oregon ArtsWatch: In 1989, Portland and Metro decided that the elected regional government should manage the five city-owned downtown performing arts venues, collectively known as the Portland’5 Centers for the Arts. Now that decision is on track to be reversed, even though the original reason for the decision is still valid and many questions remain to be resolved – especially how to pay for what could be many millions of dollars in deferred maintenance costs.

The fact that a change in management could affect the venues that much is really scary, actually. It goes to show how management really does affect how something is run. I also think it is crazy that they are not getting any funds federally whatsoever. This article puts into perspective how expensive managing and overseeing a theater or performance venue is. Renovations cost so. much that it may be better to build a whole new space. The article mentions how if PSU does get a new theater that it is "focusing on livability and safety for PSU students". This is a very valid statement, but I think they should also consider how having a space like this will help them be inspired to create art, whether it be through theater or music, or painting. Just having the building and having that space where you can be creative can help a student's creativity and health. It is sad to think that Portland arts and theaters are under this much stress.
