If You’re Waiting for the Next Hamilton, You’ll Miss It

Ken Davenport: I was chatting with a potential Broadway investor recently. After some back and forth, they ultimately decided against investing. Totally fine . . . this happens all the time. (Raising money for Broadway shows is like auditioning is for Actors – you get a lot of nos . . . but you keep asking because you believe in what you’re doing . . . and eventually you’ll get a yes.)

I loved what the article says about waiting for the “right” or “perfect” show to come along instead of looking at the shows and arts that are right in front of your eyes. When art is first getting created, most of the time no one can see the end goal or vision until much later in the process. I think it is important for artist young and old alike to rethink the idea of “invest in what you love”. If you are always saying no or always giving up on something you will never get anywhere in life, but if you instead look for the thing you are passionate about and truly care about then that is the thing you should fight for, not for success or for money, but because it is your passion and it is something you care for and are ready to fight for.

Honestly my favorite thing about this article is the fact that it puts into words what I have been thinking for so many years. All of these ideas are crazy or outlandish until their not, and when they are not, its never a shocker, but why? It just sometimes seems that we as a community are so familiar with the creative cycle, yet we repeatedly question it. The idea in itself is just amusing. Even though this is an idea that I have been familiar with now as a creator myself (having my fair share of both successes and many many many failed pitches) it is so important for the audience of theater investors to take a chance. No amazing idea for a show has never appeared that way so obviously the first time it came out of someone's mouth, so take that chance! Seriously, even though this is obvious to some, I love that this article is reaching further audiences and able to get this idea out there.
