U.S. Lumber Coalition highlights impact of U.S. trade laws

Woodworking Network: "Trade law enforcement against unfairly traded Canadian lumber imports has been a resounding success for American workers, companies, and forestry dependent communities, and has strengthened a stable supply chain of made-in-the-U.S.A. lumber to build American homes," stated Andrew Miller, chairman and owner of Stimson Lumber and chair of the U.S. Lumber Coalition.

The United States does not have the same quality of forests as Canada, having cleared much of its prime forestland decades ago to make way for cities. As a result, we lack old-growth trees to harvest and rely heavily on Canadian imports. With Trump's approach we may not see the negative effects in the first year of this policy but, one of two outcomes seems likely: We are just going to see lower quality lumber coming out of the lumber yard, or we are going to start cutting into our remaining natural forests to keep up with demand. Only time will tell but when looking at the lumber available in the United States and the time it takes trees to grow this trade war will ultimately negatively affect the market and quality of lumber provided to the American people.
