Seamless Collaboration: Costume Shop Brings Student Designs to Life

Emerson Today: With a needle, thread, and ruler in hand, Heidi Keithahn ’26 meticulously measures and alters costumes for an upcoming Emerson Stage production. Keithahn, a Theatrical Design and Production major, is one of 16 student workers putting their skills to work in Emerson’s Costume Shop this semester. The students and four staff members work collaboratively, costuming all Emerson Stage shows.

The opportunity to work in technical shops in collegiate theater programs is invaluable. These work study opportunities (or work for pay opportunities) give students work experience and Hands-On educational experience in the departments they wish to engage with. This allows students to apply the Practical knowledge learned in their stagecraft classes to real world work applications. By having these opportunities through the school, students can work around their class schedule and build relationships with the upperclassman crew heads and faculty in those areas, for whom they may work for in the future. The flexibility to build your own work schedule is also a lifesaver, allowing students to take on as much as they would like in addition to their coursework and other production assignments. Not only does it help the students but it also provides vital hands in realizing productions.
