The Space Between: Measuring The Impact Of Flying Subwoofers Behind Main Arrays
ProSoundWeb: Flying subwoofers directly behind a flown full-range array is now a well-established approach in large-scale live sound reinforcement. Some people, when learning of the technique, inquire as to whether any of the output from the subwoofers is blocked by the mains.
The typical answer is that the subwoofers emit low frequencies with long wavelengths (50 Hz = 22.5 ft/6.8 m) that can simply bend around the main hang and continue on their way, rather than being occluded. I realized during a recent iteration of this explanation that I had never tested it myself, and as far as I could remember, had never seen any data in support of this explanation.

This article goes a lot deeper into actual sound and systems design. I think that’s the one thing that I have not as much knowledge about. Systems design is just a whole new world for me and I’m super excited to learn more about it in the future. Reading this article, I have a brief understanding of systems design and I understand the terminology used and kind of the language and theory behind it but I feel like I just don’t have enough or any hands on experience designing systems which is something that I really look forward to. I feel like a bad system can absolutely ruin an exceptional sound design and if systems design is not something that is being taken into consideration, then everything just falls flat. Overall this was a super interesting article and I would definitely recommend others to read this article because it was so so informative.
