Wenger | J.R. Clancy: January through April is the exciting, nerve-wracking, and crazy period that actors refer to as “audition season”. During these months, the majority of the auditions for the entire year take place. This trend is not limited to major theater hubs like New York City and London. In fact, this trend is primarily driven by summer stock theater.

Audition season must be stressful. I imagine the design & production hiring season is similar in pattern as the same summer stock places and theaters are looking for backstage and production members to fill their company. Right now is when SOD buzz begins about where people are applying, where they’re getting into, and an influx of requests for letters of recommendation. I think these months tend to give people a lot of stress because results of these months are dictating people’s years in terms of what kind of job they’ll have, where they’ll travel to for work, and causes people’s self esteem to rise and fall as decisions come back. It’s like the college application season from October to January in highschool when seniors are all doing interviews and sometimes auditions to decide where they’ll go for the next handful of years. I think it is an exciting time as much as it is stressful.
Audition season seems so so stressful because of all the tapes that have to be sent in. With the digital age, self-tapes seem more common but back in the day when you had to fly to new york or big audition hubs to be able to audition for things, I wonder how much more it would cost and whether or not that become a lot bigger of a barrier to entry for the entertainment industry. I feel like along with the audition season also comes the application season for designers and managers because summer stock is such a chaotic rush to find people for everything. Sometimes it seems a lot harder for designers and managers to find jobs because it is so much easier for us to apply to things. All we need is a resume, cover letter, and our portfolio and we could mass submit to all the applications that we want so it creates a lot more competition within applicants.
