Sam Parry reflects on an illuminating experience with Sea Girls

TPi: Having led the lighting charge for multiple touring campaigns, Sam Parry of The Owl Creative Design, recently curated the Sea Girl’s most ambitious lighting design to date in celebration of the band’s third studio album. TPi’s Alicia Pollitt caught up with the lighting designer at the end of the UK tour to get an insight into how this arena-worthy design toured a range of academy-sized venues.

What a cool show and lighting design. I thought it was interesting they were incorporating that punk rock look into the show. Also, it's weird that he said they couldn't find certain fixtures just because they were so popular. Well, not weird, but just surprising that any one fixture could be so cool! I wonder how much they cost, and if they are more accessible nowadays. My high school recently switched over to all LED fixtures (it's easy because you can just replace the back of the light), and I wonder which company/model they went with. I also wonder if you get a crappy enough light that it'll break. Usually lighting fixtures are so reliable that you don't really have to worry about them breaking. They're just a lamp and a barrel, really, unless they're moving lights or LED fixtures. The more complicated something is, the easier it breaks.

Reading about Sam Parry’s experience with Sea Girls and their latest tour was such a vibe. The idea of recreating a video wall of lights using GLP JDC 2 IP fixtures is genius. who doesn’t love a bit of punk rock chaos served with some cutting-edge tech? And the fact that Sam experimented with ambient content to complement the band’s new album is just chef’s kiss. It’s cool when designers go beyond just “making things look good” and really tie the visuals to the music’s vibe. Also, shoutout to grandMA3 for being Sam’s one-stop shop. It’s always fun to hear about designers geeking out over tools that make their lives easier—and the way he’s hyped about it is contagious. I could feel his excitement, and now I kind of want to see it in action just to understand what all the fuss is about. dream setup—doing what you love with people you vibe with while creating something truly next-level. It’s just proof that when a team clicks, magic happens.

This article reminds me that I do in fact think concert lighting is extremely cool, I never really forgot but I am somehow still reminded that it is cool. It also makes me remember that I do not know a lot about lighting equipment, however the capability to control the lighting all from one place sounds very convenient and nice. It was kind of funny to hear that it was impossible to find the lighting fixture they were looking for since everyone was also wanting it, but glad they were able to find the ones they needed. It was also cool to hear that the band was invested into the lighting design and the vision of a technologically advanced system, and that the technicians had such a fun time working on the show and touring with it. Touring with a bunch of people who are close seems like it would be a dream come true.
