Preview: ‘Clyde’s’ at City Theatre

onStage Pittsburgh: Don’t laugh. John Updike, who grew up outside this Central Pennsylvania city, set his “Rabbit” novels there. Nottage, one of the country’s most honored playwrights, moved to the faded industrial town to research Sweat, her study of working-class people whose lives were upended and, in some cases, destroyed by the 2008 recession.

Having read Sweat during freshman year, I’m super excited to see Clyde’s once it opens at City theater. So far I’ve seen two productions there since I’ve been in Pittsburgh and both have been phenomenal so I have high expectations for this production as well. Not only that, I think I will like this show especially because it’s a comedic commentary on real life and those are absolutely my favorite types of plays. Not to mention that it’s set in the rust belt which I’ve grown to know a little bit about over the last three years in Pittsburgh. It is a little frustrating that all the actors seem to be from New York, but it seems that it’s difficult for LORT theaters to subsist on local talent just because there aren’t enough gigs to remain gainfully employed. Looking forward to seeing a fully staged Lyn Nottage play and hopefully I get to see more in the near future.
