Why are so many Bay Area theater leaders leaving their jobs?

Datebook: For years now I’ve been writing about what feels like a sea change in Bay Area theater leadership: artistic directors and managing directors stepping down, many after decades of service, having left indelible imprints on their companies, the region, the art form.

The fact that many people are leaving their jobs in theatre, especially people in leadership positions seems a little odd. It definitely can help show how things should change in the industry though. It seems to me that the three people that the article directly talks about are leaving because they are being asked to spend more time and put more effort into their jobs than they are either getting compensated for or personally willing to do. It just goes to show how the industry has been a ‘if you really love it you will do it just because’ kind of set up, not pushing for proper compensation for time and work put in. Now it seems like people are finally standing up for that to change because more and more people are being open about it and the burnout that they might be experiencing because of it as well.
