Disclaimer here: I am white and recognize that I will never understand the extent of my privilege or fully understand the experiences of those who have experienced micro-aggressions and racism.
It's unfortunate to see such apparent racism daily in our modern world, even and especially in places that bring in people, specifically children, from all over. As a person with privilege, it is crucial to recognize that there is no way for people of color to escape different treatment due to race. I am glad that in the past few years, there has been more information straight from the oppressed about what is happening and to see that change is being made. However, I cannot even begin to express how difficult it is to know that this is still an issue in our society. The steps taken at Sesame Place remind me a lot of what is happening here at CMU. I hope that these trainings and resources help end racism in these spaces and that with educational and professional theatre workplaces taking these steps towards DEI(B), this field will continue to sprout diverse voices and artists from all genders, races, and backgrounds.
