Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia Workers Vote to Form Union
IATSE: In a historic election, Production Employees at Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia voted “Yes” for a union with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), Local 8. One hundred percent of the votes cast were in support of IATSE. Last month, the Stagehands, Technicians, and Engineers employed by Live Nation at the 1000-person capacity music venue, bowling alley, and restaurant in Philadelphia petitioned the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for an election of eligible employees.

It seems like a great thing that the production employees at the Brooklyn Bowl in Philadelphia voted to join IATSE. If other employees doing similar work who are also employed by the same overarching company are also in IATSE, it would make logical sense for the folks working at Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia to want the same benefits for themselves. Hopefully employees at the other three locations will be inspired to unionize as well to get the health benefits, job protection, and livable wages that this group did. It is inspiring to see that so many Americans support unions these days. My mom worked for the nurses’ union in Seattle when I was young and there was not nearly as much support back then, and being a proud member of a union myself now, it gives me hope that people will continue to look out for their own best interests and larger corporations will not be able to take advantage of the little guy.
I find it to be so exhilarating that the workers at the Brooklyn Bowl were able to unionize. Unions allow for workers to gain equal protections and rights within the workplace, as well as protect their individual rights in regards to their own safety, as well as reasonable working conditions. In terms of why the unionization of said workers is so important, I think the article says it best: ““The workers who support these club venues are the foundation of the live event music industry. They need a family-sustaining wage,” said Michael Barnes 1st International Vice President, IATSE. (https://iatse.net/brooklyn-bowl-philadelphia-workers-vote-yes-for-union/ )” I am glad that the article sheds a positive light on unionization, and promotes an overall message encouraging workers rights to better treatment in the workplace, regardless of their field of work. Unions are often regarded in a bad light in more conservative spaces, so the importance of showing the positive actions of union organizations is especially important when creating a more communally positive environment.
