The new Open Access policy in Equity was long over due. The previous regulations were pretty steep for new artists coming into the workforce, especially focusing on Stage Managers. So many would continue to work “unprotected”, with rough working conditions, or not getting paid as much as someone doing the same job because they weren’t a member. I believe that the “How to Hire Me” letter is an amazing idea with good information for non-union houses. New artists can be less afraid to join the union without the fear of not being able to work the, sometimes easier to attain positions, in a non-union house. Before I was on the fence about ever joining Equity but with these advancements I am looking forward to possibly become a member in the future. The horror stories surrounding stage management have gone on too long in this industry and I am glad that things are beginning to change and I look forward to even more advances in equity and inclusion in the world of theatre.
