I am sooooo over old, ugly looking self-promotion materials. Dark, plain, dull colors, a lack of spatial design, etc… It has to go!! I do recognize that sometimes this is what is considered “traditionally professional,” but there is a way to be professional without taking away any and all artistry, color, and design from the mix. Business cards are a great way to really seal a first impression, and you may as well use that card to represent who you are BEYOND your contact information. We work in an arts business, so if you have a certain aesthetic that you feel defines your work and personality, I believe it should shine in your business card and resume. Creative branding also shows your clients, mentors, and literally anyone who looks at your stuff that you care about your work and have put effort into making it seamless. I love that this article compiles all kinds of business cards, with all kinds of aesthetics, to introduce people to what they COULD be doing to promote themselves.
I love a good business card design. Who doesn't? This past summer I took a job with a trading company and did some work for their new website, like content scouting and translation, but I also designed their new business cards. It was still kind of old fashioned, but with new fonts, uniform margins, the updated logo, and a generally cleaner design. I did a lot of research on graphic design and saved a ton of inspiration ideas on Pinterest. It was hard not to go all out with the design because a lot of the modern ones are really, really cool; but this company was more traditional and well-established, so I went with a more stoic route. I had dabbled a bit in business card design before just for fun, but that was when I truly wasn't any good at it. I'm nearing a point in my life where having a business card would probably be very useful, so maybe I'll get back into that.
