EEOC Dialogues: Disability

Actors' Equity Association: On Wednesday, June 2, Equity’s Equal Employment Opportunity Committee held its biannual dialogue on disability, featuring artist and inclusion expert Claudia Alick. Alick began by asking participants to consider the virtual space they were in, and what each aspect of the webinar might mean in terms of accessibility, from sharing pronouns in an introduction to who has their microphone on and who is muted.

I think the most impactful part of this article is the quote “it served me well to be really, really explicit. And to have my access rider that says, ‘These are my needs.’” Too often are minorities, especially disabled people, expected to take on the burden of making spaces safe for them, of educating and finding accessible alternatives. Alick turns this on its head by demanding what they need. Disabled people are an integral part of the theater community, especially in a more virtual world. It should be the responsibility of the institutions and people in power to ensure the safety and comfort of disabled members of the community. It’s embarrassing as an industry when our spaces and practices cannot meet the bare minimums for accessibility. The conversations like the one in this article are so necessary to continue asking more of our industry.
