I hadn’t realized that the contracts with these “new media” companies had more relaxed rules and not as much union oversight. I knew that they were within the jurisdiction of IATSE, but I’m surprised they let it go this long. It’s also disappointing that the production companies are pushing back when they have such massive budgets and profits each season as streaming content has become more and more of the norm. Hopefully they are able to come to some sort of agreement that helps out the members of IATSE and payes into their pensions, etc. It is funny to think that the economics were “uncertain” at one time because those production companies have been dominating the market with covid having shut down the majority of live theater. The other interesting thing the article mentions is that they started off by giving the production companies a break because it was “mutually beneficial.” I guess if you give an inch, they’ll take a mile.
