Madame Breaux Costume House: the woman behind krewe costumes

www.theadvertiser.com: Dangling button earrings sway with Suzanne Breaux as she flips through binders of costume sketches — full of bell skirts and corset tops, embellished sleeves and dramatic collars. From floor to ceiling her shop is filled with sequins, yards of eccentric fabrics, hulking decorative tunics and bouffant-style skirts.

I LOVED this article! I had never thought about the costumes in the mardi gras festival before! Its so interesting to hear about the processes that occur to make the large shows. It so inspiring to hear her story and how she ended up running this costume shop! I also thought it was so interesting that she is the designer AND builder!! That is something that is very different compared to professional theatrical costuming. I also was perplexed at the fact that with some of the costumes are only fitted in muslin as to keep the secrets of the royalty. That must be so nerve racking to create a whole costume and not be able to have a final fitting!! This article reminded me of a practice in my hometown of San Antonio. During Fiesta there is a royal court, and the princesses of the court get these fabulous gowns with extremely long trains. Each year has a theme and the trains are elaborately embroidered, beaded, and embellished.
