Pittsburgh's Long-Running Satirical Revue And Fundraiser Goes Online
90.5 WESA: With 19 years under its belt, “Off The Record” is surely Pittsburgh’s longest-running satirical musical revue. But while the coronavirus pandemic won’t stop it, neither will the 20th annual production be quite the same.
I've never heard of “Off The Record,” however Pittsburgh’s longest-running satirical musical revue sounds awesome. It’s awesome to know that there is a show organized by the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh and SAG-AFTRA, the union for film, tv and radio performers. I didn't even know that some of those unions/guilds exist. Also, the fact that this show raises more then $600,000 over the past 19 years for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, I’m very happy that they decided to continue this tradition into the COVID world. I’ve never thought about shows that spotlight the unions that produce them and Off the Record definitely does something different then other performances. I feel like the most interesting part of this article was the end where they mention a change in Guild leadership. I wonder if the change of leadership was a positive change or a negative one. Many rabbit holes await me.
We could all use a good laugh these days, so I love that this comedy tradition will still be available for its new and loyal listeners alike. Its really heartwarming that local theatres and troupes of artists are still finding ways to spread their art and stories with their communities. What is particularly special about this moment in time is that sharing a link with your friends to show them the incredible work/show a company is doing online is infinitely easier than paying for everyone’s ticket and picking out a day to see a show. Theatre has become more accessible now than ever before, though its arguably very much not the same experience. My hope is that people who hadn’t been exposed to or had access to theatre before the pandemic will become great fans of it now and will remain so when were allowed to hold live shows again. While theatre is experiencing so many losses, changes, and restrictions it would be lovely to know that we acquired new audience members as the light at the end of the tunnel.
