What It's Been Like Performing Throughout the Pandemic

Dance Magazine: The world looked different when I started rehearsals for the world tour of The Phantom of the Opera. It was January 2019, and my only concerns were to put on the best show possible and to enjoy my time on tour. That December, we settled down in the city of Busan to begin our nine-month run in South Korea. Who could have imagined that in a few months we would be "perhaps the only major show running" in the world?

While their choice to continue putting on shows was beyond risky and makes me worry about their health and safety moving forward, it strangely warms my heart to hear how successful it has been for them thus far. Days like these, I'm sure everyone in the entertainment industry struggles with thoughts as to whether we'll be able to go out there and do our jobs again any time soon. It really doesn't seem like that will be happening for quite some time, and even then, things will surely be different, with potentially lots of hiccups along the way. However, hearing that this world tour has been going on through the peak of things, with only two people testing positive from March until now, gives me a bit of hope. I can only imagine the amount measures being taken by everyone involved. Kamei spoke on their worries about potentially contracting the virus, causing the show to close because of them, making me think of how important personal accountability is right now. It is vital for each member of the team to be responsible. The managers and department heads can implement as many rules as they want, but it is down to every single person within the company to ensure that they are following the necessary precautions, not only for their own safety, but also for the people around them and for the bigger picture. These days we all have to be selfless and not only think about our personal wants and needs, but the people around us as well and how we are contributing to making things better.
