Producers Guild Issues COVID-19 Rules as Industry Restarts Production

Variety: The Producers Guild of America has issued an extensive safety guide for independent producers as they return to work amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The PGA, which has more than 8,000 members, unveiled the 57-page document Monday with detailed recommendations on testing, maintaining physical distancing and wearing personal protective equipment.

I would love to get to working as much as anyone else, and I understand that the need for a paycheck can necessitate the beginning of entertainment work to begin again, but this kind of feels like the wrong move on the Guild’s part. Granted, I have not read through the 57 pages of rules for production, but so many social distancing and health safety rules and regulations being put out are reliant on individuals keeping their word and doing their part, and the effectiveness of those regulations are reliant on having every person adhering to them. I’ve watched people cut corners on social distancing all summer, and it puts everyone at risk, especially those who are more vulnerable, don't have the choice of not working, and/or don’t have the resources to stay as safe. Even entertaining the possibility of allowing production to happen on a larger scale feels reckless given that the number of new COVID cases in the US is still very high (although perhaps no longer rising like it was a month or so ago). I’d like to think that everyone would follow all the regulations put in place, but my pessimism makes me think that it's going to turn these producing sites into COVID hotspots.

I believe that the arts and entertainment industries are vital in creating a space where human's feel heard and appreciated, especially during such difficult times. The regulations put out by the guild seem to focus on moving the industry forward and adapting the traditional production process to COVID-19 rather than using this as an opportunity to rethink the way we create art. This pandemic seems to be getting worse and spreading faster than ever, the guild is opening productions while this pandemic is at its worst. Covid-19 does bring a time where the arts industries can focus more on animations and graphics or on films with a very small cast, expanding what we currently see in movies, television, and live theatre. It can also be an opportunity to find the beauty in minimalism and what can be achieved with the least amount of resources and labor. Opening up the possibility to make full length feature films can increase the spread and the chance for these productions to be shut down in the future.
