Faces of the arts shutdown: Sean Fanning: 'A total emotional roller coaster'

The San Diego Union-Tribune: Six months after everything shut down in the arts world, Sean Fanning still cannot believe what the coronavirus has done to the industry he loves so much.

“Everything just stopped dead in its tracks,” said Fanning, a freelance scenic designer whose work has been seen in countless theatrical and live entertainment productions in San Diego County. “It’s absolutely bizarre to go from this pressurized system of collaboration and creation — which for me, had been a nonstop job for over a decade — to a complete halt.”

The word “roller coaster” somehow drew my attention to read this article. Throughout the article, I could realize how Sean Fanning was conducting such a busy and diligent life before COVID actually began to affect his ordinary life, or actually, even a bit after it did. That was perhaps the reason why he was hit extra hard by COVID. I was sorry to see the negative changes that he had to go through, but as he touches at the end, I want people to realize that, while there are downhill tracks on the roller coasters, there are also the uphill ones. I expect there to be a huge bounce back to several industries, of course including theaters, once the world finally get free from COVID-19. Not being able to attend the real performances and events are not only harming the industries, but also increasing the complaints and demand from the customers. Therefore, I hope that as soon as the society recovers, the roller coaster track of many people’s lives to turn their direction into the uphill instead of the downhill.
