Facebook’s Project Aria and the race to map reality.
slate.com: Smart glasses are the holy grail of augmented reality, which promises to overlay digital content on top of the physical world (think Pokémon Go, except with a lot more than cartoon characters). Seemingly every company in Silicon Valley is interested in AR, but on Wednesday, Facebook took a big step to the front of the pack with its announcement of “Project Aria.”

This sounds like a huge step for the world of technology. Maybe I’m just not tech savvy enough, but I hadn't considered any of the possible privacy concerns mentioned in the article at all. Even now I’m wondering, what can Facebook find out about us that they don’t already know? So there may be cause for alarm, but wasn’t there already?
Setting aside the red flags and concerning lack of regulation, this would be a very interesting addition to the world of theater. I’m assuming the technology won't become widely accessible for at least a few years, maybe by the next pandemic. But if we had had these glasses during COVID, theater would've been revolutionized. We might've been able to experience actors performing shows in our own homes. That’s crazy to think about. Hopefully this technology continues to develop (responsibly, with limits). If these glasses ever become more widely available, an entirely new genre of theater could be brought into existence.
