How Pittsburgh couple turned their 3D printer into Infinite Labs for the battle against coronavirus

News | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: By now, it's no secret that the country is undersupplied for the current pandemic, perhaps best evidenced by the lack of medical-grade masks available for the people who need them the most. Every day, new photos circulate on social media of doctors wearing handkerchiefs to cover their faces and trash bags to cover their bodies because they have nothing else. To help provide some layer of protection, many people are jumping in to create DIY masks in whatever way they can.

It has been amazing to find out the different kinds of ways that fields seemingly unrelated to health care or people who lack ties to the industry are able to be crafty with the tools that they do know how to use to help society. It is amazing to me that this story focuses on someone who decided to purchase this 3D printer for fun but ended up getting out of it much more than I am sure he bargained for. I love that he and his wife have taken the initiative to turn a hobby into a full scale production that is helping many people. It makes me wonder how advantaged or disadvantaged are we by having the development of technology that we do, like smartphones, streaming services, and consumer grade machines that synthesize physical objects using only plastic filament. It is really interesting to see that many people have been enable to help using the skills that they have wanted to take up.
