As Stages Go Dark, Companies Stumble

The New York Times: The 17th-century philosopher Blaise Pascal once wrote: “The sole cause of people’s unhappiness is that they do not know how to stay quietly in their rooms.” Yet at a time when much of the world has been forced to hunker down, French theater-makers are fighting to fill the void by making noise online.

I find it so interesting to see how theatres from around the world are adjusting to the current world circumstances. Since the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, most, if not all theatres around the world have been shut down. Theatres are unfortunately the perfect way to spread a disease around, as you have hundreds of people in a single room. Although Covid-19 is not particularly airborne, at least not nearly as much as most other infectious diseases, so many people in such a small space will still cause the infection to spread with ease. In any case, theatres closing is quite tragic. It is refreshing to see that so many theatres are trying to make online content by doing live sessions as well as granting access to old show recordings. Not only does it benefit theatre fiends who can never have enough theatre in their life, but it also is nice for people who may not be able attend a theatre performance in normal circumstances. In any case, as is with most everything else, the closing of theatres is truly devastating.
