10 trail-blazing women in design to be inspired by

Creative Bloq: To mark International Women’s day, we’re celebrating 10 of the world’s most inspiring women in design. These are the glass-ceiling-shattering trailblazers who inspire us to be better designers.

Their work crosses disciplines and breaks boundaries. And looking at the incredible women here, it seems hard to believe that the design industry still lacks diversity.

Now, this is the kind of article I like to read. I love hearing about empowering women in my field because it makes me want to become one of them one day. I would love to be a person picked among some of the top women in the field. All of these amazing designers have done pretty astounding things with their careers, and that was against all of the odds. The fact that 78% of the design field is men, is simply unacceptable. In our freshman design and production class, the number of women and femme people overpowers the number of men, and yet this industry still pouts down the majority, and that says something about the people that are in charge of hiring. At the top of this article, they also link the website that’s all about how only 3% of creative directors are women, which adds to the adversity that women have to face in this workplace.

I find it extremely inspiring to read about these well-known successful female designers. When I saw the article I expected to read about the classic kind of stereotypical design positions for females like costumes and fashion, so it was really refreshing to read about these smart women who do graphic designs and combine science with art. Those are the kinds of designers that people shouldn’t be surprised to hear about. I remember watching an episode on Es Devlin and just feeling so wowed by her person and her design mind. She is a well known set designer for music concerts and art installations. I remember one way she described how she thought of designs was she liked to look at something perfect and clean like a blank sheet of paper and she would take that and destroy it. Ripping, tearing, and burning it is what inspires her designs and art. I find that super fascinating.

I absolutely love reading about all the powerful and incredible women that are producing powerful and incredible work. Similar to what Hannah mentioned, it always stuns me about the power that the male/ masculine minority has over the female/ femme majority in the industry. Looking around the School of Drama and beyond, I see so many strong females that take dominate in their fields, and it is so infuriating to think that their work (and my work) will be seen as less than because of gender. However, I still think that is absolutely incredible that all of these women are tops in their field and have grown to create and develop widely-recognized work that is changing fields and world views of art. Some of these artists, I had not seen or heard of before- but I had known their work (such as Mina Markham and her work with the Clinton campaign), but I am absolutely inspired by them and cannot wait to see what other things they will do as I continue to seek out their work.
