Second Stage Theater 2016-17 Season: Anna Deavere Smith, Tracy Letts
Variety: The new docu-solo from Anna Deavere Smith and older titles from Tracy Letts and Bruce Norris are on the 2016-17 season slate at Off Broadway’s Second Stage Theater.
The latest from writer-performer Smith (“Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992,” “Nurse Jackie”), “Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education,” is culled from more than 200 interviews centering on the realities of the U.S. education and justice systems that push poor students from schools to prisons.

I love Anna Deavere Smith and Tracy Letts. Last year, I actually got to see Anna Deavere Smith perform a play she wrote called "Never Giving Up," and it was probably the best play I've seen. She focuses on race issues mostly in her work, and the show I went to see was a matinee with a bunch of different high schools. There was a talk back afterward, and it was clear from the talk back that her work was so poignant even those who have never suffered from racial prejudice were touched. I would really love to see her new play.Tracy Lett's "August: Osage County"is probably one of my favorites if not my favorite play. They made a movie out of it, but I would recommend not watching the movie and just reading the play because it's honestly amazing, and I really love Lett's choice to write about a family because it's something that's so universal and intimate for everyone, and even if you family is nothing like the family in the play (I think almost no one's is), you can still relate to the characters and plot. I really wished I lived in New York so I could have the chance to see these shows.
