I think that a production like Straight White Men is exactly what the world of theatre needs during a time period like the one we are living in today, where so many people, so many communities of people are trying to get representation of themselves in government, film and television, theatre, business, etc. This production shows that the struggle for diversity within theatre does not solely lie in the diversity of the actors we see in a production onstage, but the people who produce the show from behind the scenes and throughout the creative process. While it is important for the public to see a diverse cast in as many theatrical productions as possible, having a diverse group of people working in the creative design, writing, and production processes before rehearsals even start are just as, if not more, important because these things allow an audience to see the stories and/or interpretations of stories through many many sets of diverse eyes. So, the idea that even thought the main cast is all played by white males, the character of the female stagehand, along with the women director, writer, and composer is what really makes the team that has worked on this production so unique.
